A Star is Born has been remade three times, in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, in 1976 with Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, in 2018 with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, and the original was made in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The version being reviewed here will be the 2018 remake. This movie is Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut and the first serious role for Lady Gaga.
The first thing that needs to be said about this movie is wow. It starts out with Jack (Bradley Cooper) opening a concert while down on her luck Ally (Lady Gaga) is preparing to sing in a drag bar. Eventually, these two meet and fate takes hold for them. One is pushed to stardom while another has their star begin to fade. This movie does an excellent job of holding your attention while at the same time telling a worthwhile story and slowly building Jack’s backstory. While this film has a compelling story, it does feel a bit sluggish at times, but the acting ability of the two main stars make up for any faults. One thing the entire movie had was a level of authenticity and intensity that not many movies can do.
A review for this movie wouldn’t be worth anything without mentioning the soundtrack for this movie. It was fantastic and allowed Lady Gaga to show off her voice. I immediately downloaded the soundtrack on Spotify. It was that good to me.
I loved this movie and if you enjoy good storytelling with a mix of some terrific music. Then I am sure you will like this movie as well!
